Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan is a blonde-haired blue-eyed,
blonde-haired woman with an exuberant personality. She was born Margaret Mary
Emily Hyra to Susan (Duggan) and was the daughter of an English teacher and a
former actor. Harry Hyra was a math teacher. Ruthenian and Polish, Irish,
German, and German descent. "Hyra", her maternal grandmother's maiden
name, is Ruthenian. Meg has graduated from Bethel high school in Bethel in June
1979. She moved to New York and majored as a journalist at New York University.
Meg Ryan was her new name, entered acting to earn extra cash while she was
finishing her education. 1981 was her big screen debut. She played Candice
Bergen's daughter in George Cukor's film Rich and Famous (1981). She auditioned
, and was named Betsy on the daytime television soap as the World turns (1956).
The show starred her from 1982 until 1984. Meg was also part of the cast in the
television series One of the Boys (1982) which, however, was later cancelled.
In 1984, she relocated to Hollywood and was offered an appearance in the
western television Series Wildside (1985). Meg had a small role in Top Gun
(1986), which led to her casting in Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) where
she was a co-star with Dennis Quaid. She was again in the same role with Dennis
Quaid in the remake of D.O.A. (1988) and married in Saint Valentine's Day 1991.
In 1989, Meg appeared in When Harry Met Sally... (1989) and the scene in the
restaurant became famous. Meg was nominated twice for the Golden Globe and
BAFTA. In 1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
and this time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. Also, she was
part of the critically acclaimed Sleepless in Seattle (1993) in which she was
nominated for the Golden Globe. Meg decided to take on a different role than
her peers in 1994, playing the part of Meg as a drunken mother/wife in the film
When a Man Loves a Woman (1994). She returned to being "cute" after
that with I.Q. (1994) as well as French Kiss (1995). The year 1994 was the year
that Meg won the Harvard Hasty Pudding Award for being "Woman of the
Year" and was voted as one of "The 50 most beautiful women in the
world in 1994" by People Magazine.
